How it works

The most common type is an ion-exchange water softener:

1. Hard water passes through a tank filled with resin beads.

2. The resin exchanges calcium and magnesium ions for sodium (or sometimes potassium) ions.

3. The softened water is distributed throughout the home.

4. Periodically, the system regenerates using a salt solution to recharge the resin.
